A young boy is riding his trike down the street outside his
house, he is very excited to be allowed outside but his mother said to stay
where she can see him from the window.
He had gone up and down on his side of the road a half dozen times or so,
stopping every now and then to look at the other kids playing along the street.
A young girl about the same age comes up to speak to him,
maybe they could play together on their trikes he thought. She said her name
was Roxy and that she liked his trike.
Before the conversation got any further his mother came
running out of the house shouting and screaming at him to get inside.
"Ryan! get inside now!" then dragging him back in
the house cursing the young girl as she did.
•••
The young boy has grown up and is finishing his first week
of secondary school. He finishes his dinner and goes out to meet his new
friends who he has fun playing with in the old marshes behind the playing
fields towards the abandoned train tracks.
He informs them that he has to go home because he promised
his mother - a single parent- that he would be home no later than nine o'clock
and it was almost 8.30. As he says this a young girl named Jennifer says that
she needs to be home as well and as they live close together, she will walk
with him so as not to be alone, the young boy doesn't resist.
They reach their street and head towards home due to reach
the boys first as his is closer, looking up they see his mother waiting at the
end of the drive impatiently, half expecting him to be kidnapped or lost, and
the sight of him safe does not seem to quell her anger.
She raced towards him cursing the young girl and looking a
mad cherry red as she did it. The young girl was terrified and so was the boy
as they both froze there as both fear and confusion took over their bodies
simultaneously.
"You filthy whore! Get the fuck away from my son you -
good for nothing - cunt!" She screamed, pulling her son away from her and
attempting a violent kick which narrowly missed the young girls stomach and
sent her running down the street in tears.
"Bet she wanted to fuck you didn't she! Bet she wanted
to take you away from me! I bet that's what you want as well isn't it, to have
your bitch of a mother home alone, YOU SELFISH CUNT!"
She continued to scream into the night.
•••
It was prom night and the boy (well young man now) had been having
a few pre-drinks with his friends over at hilltop ridge and were heading down
to the school hall together where they would meet their dates before going
inside and enjoying the rest of the night.
The young man was feeling loosened up and was enjoying the time he
was spending with his date, a beautiful black haired girl named Vicki who was
in his Geography class at school and always got along due to having a birthday
a couple of days apart, a coincidence which would be their conversation starter
and begin the journey to where they currently were.
They danced and they laughed, and as the night grew on and more
snuck in booze was drunk they began to loosen up even more, getting closer and
feeling their hands all over each others bodies. He loved the way her body
curved, how her breasts formed perfectly in the palms of his hands and how she
would moan as he pulled her against him when he did it.
They had left the hall alone not long before the end and decided
to drive back up to hilltop ridge and get a bit closer. He had never been so
nervous but at the same time had never been so excited and at times struggled
to keep the butterflies in his stomach from forcing themselves out of his chest
as he held Vicki's hand in his until they were at the front of his car, an old
Toyota Corolla, and looked out over the town.
Down there somewhere, as the two made love for the first time in
both of their lives, his mother was waiting more impatiently by every passing
minute.
The two young lovers parted ways outside Vicki's house, they sat
there in each others arms for what felt like an eternity, neither of them
wanting to break first and open the car door to part ways.
He looked into her eyes and was overwhelmed by a sensation her had
never felt before in his life.
"I love you Vicki"
"I love you Ryan"
Then they kissed for the last time.
•••
He arrived home, too happy to consider that he had done anything
wrong. His mind too occupied by his first kiss with Vicki, his first touch of
her breast as they danced grinding together, and the first time they lay
together naked on his car hood after making love for the first time.
He began to walk to his room after entering the house as quietly
as he could. It was late, after midnight at least, and he didn't expect his
mother to be awake, but once he passed through the lounge he saw her there with
a glass of wine in her hand and an empty bottle on the table next to a newly
filled ashtray.
"Where have you been Ryan?"
"At the prom, you knew that"
"The prom finished hours ago, where have you been
since?"
"Mum?!. . ."
"WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?!"
"It's none of your business!" He declared before
storming off to his room and hearing nothing else for the rest of the night as
he began to forget the encounter with his mother and fell happily into the arms
of sleep, sweetened with the smell of Vicki's body as it surrounded him.
•••
He woke up feeling like a new person. He was in love and he felt
as though nothing could bring him down. Walking from his room and down the
hallway into the lounge he begun to remember the confrontation with his mother
the night before and became slightly anxious as to how she would be feeling
after some time to calm down. She should be alright, but you never knew.
Looking around the living room he tried to remember what he had
seen the night before, was there three bottles of empty wine sitting on the
coffee table when he had returned from the prom?
Thinking nothing of it, he assumed that she must have gone out to
the shops as she usually woke up a couple of hours earlier than him, especially
if he had been out the night before, and he decided to call Vicki as he
couldn't get her out of his head.
He dialled the number. It went to message immediately.
'Hello you
have reached Vicki. I'm not here right now so please leave a message after the
beep.
BEEP" Her voice sounded so magical to him and
brought back those butterflies he had first felt the night before. The way she
said beep herself before the actual beep was so cute.
He begun to put the rubbish on the table in the bin when his
phone began to ring in his pocket, bringing it out he was surprised and happy
to see that it was Vicki who had rung him.
"Hello Vicki"
"Hello Son." His mother answered.
"Mum? . . What.
."
"I thought needed to spend some time together, get to
know each other a little better you know, I feel so bad for what happened last
night I feel as though we got off on the wrong foot with this whole Vicki
thing"
She sounded sincere in her concerns and he felt he knew his
mother well enough to feel that nothing was wrong despite the situation being
extremely strange and unexpected.
"Ok. . "
"Vicki and I are at the top of hilltop ridge, you know
where that is don't you?" She asked in a voice that made Ryan sure that
she already knew what the answer would be. "we will see you there shortly,
and don't take too long, Vicki is just gagging
to see you"
Then the tone went dead as she hung up.
•••
Ryan drove his car to the ridge as fast as he could, he was
scared and confused and was unsure what to expect once he got there. It sounded
bad but surely nothing bad could happen, it was his mother after all. He neared
the location where only yesterday he had lost his virginity with his first love
and had let the butterflies carry him away to a magical place he woke up in
this morning before receiving the phone call.
He pulled up almost in the exact spot where he had parked
the night before and got out the car, looking around he did not see anyone, and
didn't see any cars for that matter.
It was just him. then his phone rang.
He answered "Hello, mum?"
"You see those trees down at the bottom of the ridge
just to your left now?" She asked him.
"Yeah, there's a small path to them"
"Take that"
And the phone went dead again.
Ryan walked down the narrow path scratching the left side of
his body against the rock wall that steadily grew in height as he did, until he
reached the edge of a small patch of a few dozen maple trees that hid what was
inside. He moved around them, cautiously, until he almost walked straight past
them and towards the flowing river below.
"Ryan! In here"
He turned to see his mother in the trees in what seemed to
be some sort of clearing a few metres in, he became more confused and slightly
more concerned and still had not seen or heard from Vicki personally.
He walked inside the shrubbery and made his way so that he
was in the clearing himself. He stumbled the last step and found himself on his
hands and knees as the vegetation gave up its hold on him. He got up and
brushed off the leaves and dirt from his clothes and realised just how enclosed
the space was and he begun to wonder how his mother knew about it when he saw
Vicki.
"She ain't so pretty anymore is she?"
Ryan looked on in horror at the love of his life as she sat
against a tree on the other side of the clearing six metres or so away. She was
tied against the tree in a rough and awkward fashion, and he could see that she
had either struggled or the rope was very tight as red welts had appeared
around her wrist and her chest.
She wasn't moving and Ryan's immediate thought was that she
was dead as her head was bleeding from what he could only guess was where his
mother had hit her, either way she was not in a good state and didn't resemble
the princess he had spent the night with before.
"What have you done?" He asked his mother without
moving or taking his eyes off of Vicki.
"What you wanted me to do. You know I love you, I'd do
anything to stop anyone who tried to break us apart"
Ryan continued to stand there in what appeared to be a state
of panic, he didn't blink and he seemed to remain focused on Vicki unconscious
in front of him. A light breeze had penetrated into the clearing and brushed
against his neck providing him with a cool sensation down his back making him
shiver.
"Someone just stepped over your grave" His mother
said with a look of triumph on her face and an overall sense of impatience.
Ryan turned and looked at her with eyes that were cold and
hollow. His face had turned slightly red and his breathing had picked up pace
becoming almost frenzied.
"Not this one mother. . " He whispered after a
moment of silence which to his mother felt a lot longer as she stood there
unsure of how he was feeling and what he was about to do. " . . The other
ones didn't matter mum, but I told you to leave this one alone."
"Come on now dear" she answered in a voice so calm
it was as though he had simply asked her if they had any milk left in the
fridge at home "We've come too far and I'm not going to throw it all away
now just because you have grown weak and let your feelings get the better of
you"
Ryan took his eyes of his mother and looked down at the
ground with its mattress of maple leaves and top soil, before looking over at
Vicki and seemed to consider something momentarily.
"You get home and clean the house, I'll sort this
out"
His mother looked at him as a smile crept at the corner of
her mouth. She walked up towards him and put her arms on his shoulder, he was
bigger than her but he was still her little boy. She looked into his eyes and
pulled him closer giving him a hug full of pride and love.
"You're a good boy" She commented as she gave him
a small kiss on the cheek. "I'll see you at home"
She began to walk away but just before she entered the
shrubbery that hid the clearing from view from the car park and walking paths
up the hill, she turned around and asked,
"What you going to do with her?"
He thought for a second - only a second - and replied,
"I'm going to put her with the rest of them"
